Wilby Parish Council

Vacancy for one parish councillor Following the recent resignation of Mr Geoff Short there are, at present, only six parish councillors.  At the meeting on 25 November the parish council decided to seek to fill this vacancy at the meeting on 5 January 2011.

If you are interested in becoming a parish councillor come along to the meeting on
5 January or contact the chairman, Ian Williamson (01349 388034) or the clerk,
Alex Pullen (01379 608625) beforehand.

Wilby Parish Council meets, usually once a month, at 7.30 pm in Coronation Hall
(the village hall), unless a different time or venue is specified.

Additional meetings may be called as and when required.

All meetings are advertised on the parish notice board.

The Press and members of the Public are invited to attend all meetings.

There is no meeting planned for December 2010.

Parish Meetings

Parish Meetings are an opportunity for residents to discuss any issues of local interest or concern, although only registered electors of the parish can vote.
Every English parish must have an Annual Parish Meeting, which must be held between 1 March and 1 June (inclusive) and which must start no earlier than 6pm.

Wilby's Annual Parish Meeting for 2010 was held on 8 April at 7.00 pm in Coronation Hall.  Thank you to everyone who attended the meeting, and especially to all those people who came along and made a presentation.  Unfortunately, on Tuesday 6 April 2010, for personal reasons, Mr Brett of Mid Suffolk District Council cancelled the presentation "Plans for the land at the rear of Church Close" which he had been due to give to the meeting.

The village hall, 'Coronation Hall', is in the centre of Wilby village and stands, opposite the school, on the corner of London City Road with the main Brundish road.

The hall is used for a variety of events (see the 'What's On' page) and is available for private hire.

The hall, officially opened on Saturday 28th May 1955, was the first permanent village hall in Suffolk to be built by voluntary labour. It was built as a permanent memorial of the Coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II..

• This small school has an excellent reputation.
• There is a part time nursery provision which is shared with another local school.
• The large playing field is used in fine weather and, when wet, the hall provides the space for indoor games.
• A wildlife area, fenced off at the end of the playing field, is used for nature studies.
• IT facilities are available in all classrooms.
• The school has a link to a school in Mbauro in Kenya.

FOWSA

The Friends of Wilby School Association (FOWSA) is a registered charity (no 1063475) which was formed in 1995 with the object of supporting learning at Wilby School.  It is an association of parents and carers of children who attend Wilby School, including Nursery, and members of the school staff.  Members work throughout the year to organise fundraising events and, on average, raise £5000 a year, which is used for the benefit of the children at Wilby School.

Money which the Friends of Wilby School Association raises goes directly to the school:
supporting on-going expenses such as the photocopier and the running of the
      mini-bus
purchasing equipment; recent purchases have included laptops, smart boards, books,
      PE equipment
FOWSA consults closely with the school before committing money to a specific project and also to identify areas where future financial support may be needed.

Although the main fundraising events are the Summer Fair and the Christmas Fair many other events take place throughout the year, such as Cake Stalls, Race Nights and Film Nights.  The majority of the events are open to members of the public (see What's On page) although Film Nights are only open to children, and their families, who attend Wilby School and the school staff.

The committee always welcomes fresh ideas for fundraising events.

The committee meets regularly throughout the year and the 2010 AGM is on 15 November.

For every full bag collected by Cash 4 Schools the Friends of Wilby School will receive a cash donation.

Church

Services                                                              
A service is held in Wilby Church every Sunday, either of Morning Prayer, Holy Communion or a special service for families, Village Worship.  Details are shown on the Church noticeboard and in the Parish Newsletter.  In addition there is a short service of prayers each Wednesday at 9am and 7pm.  All are welcome to attend any of these services.

Wilby Church is normally open during daylight hours for anyone wishing to visit or seeking a place for quiet reflection or prayer.

Drop In
On the first Wednesday of each month at 2.30pm everyone is invited to drop in to the church for a cup of tea, cake and chat. Normally some 40 members of the Wilby community attend and the spread of cakes, biscuits, sandwiches and sausage rolls is not to be missed. There is no charge but donations are welcome.

WI

Forget what you have heard about Jam and Jerusalem!  Come and see for yourselves that we are a small group of friendly local ladies (15 at present) who meet every third Thursday in the month at 7.30 pm in Wilby Coronation Hall.
We enjoy each others company and 'catch up' with what has happened to us in the last month; lots of laughter and chatter!  Different speakers on every subject you can think of come along and teach us something we didn't know - most of the time!  We go on trips out and enjoy other events put on by Suffolk East Federation of WIs, of which we are a part.
We are not formal or staid, far from it, so if you have lived here for years or just moved into Wilby, you would be warmly welcomed.  Come along and meet new friends and enjoy what our small WI has to offer.
We promise you won't have to make jam!

Wilby

Wilby is a small parish in the area traditionally known
as 'High Suffolk'. The name 'Wilby' is generally
accepted to be of Old English origin and means
'Ring of Willows'.
Wilby today is an attractive, small village, set in the North Suffolk countryside, with a population of just over 200. We have a 13th century church, a well-regarded primary school and a village hall. We no longer have any shops or pubs, but the nearby village of Stradbroke offers these facilities together with a senior school, post office, doctor's surgery, library and swimming pool.
The area is predominantly agricultural and the houses are varied, ranging from 15th century cottages and farmhouses to the present day.
There is a good community spirit, with a wide variety of events to attend - the dances in Wilby Village Hall are still popular after many years. Visitors to Wilby comment on the friendly people, the peace and quiet and the wildlife - perhaps reminiscent of an England a few decades ago. On the other hand there is easy access to both Norwich and Ipswich, the Suffolk Heritage Coast and, via the main-line train at Diss, to London

100th Bomb Group Memorial Museum (7 Miles)
The 100th Bomb Group Memorial Museum is a tribute to the Eighth Air Force. There is a fine collection of U.S.A.A.F. uniforms, decorations and combat records.

Easton Farm Park (8 Miles)
Easton Farm Park is celebrating it's 35th birthday in 2009. Just over 25 years ago Easton first opened it's gates to visitors. Over one million visitors have since enjoyed a day in the country at Easton Farm Park.

Halesworth and District Museum (9 Miles)
The Museum was founded in 1984 and has always been in the care of volunteers. In 2000 it moved to the newly refurbished station building. Railway Heritage paid for the restoration of the station's unique movable platforms.
